Health and Pregnancy
Health and pregnancy. When it comes to pregnancy, we’ve all heard and factually know that smoking, drinking and malnutrition create a poor environment for healthy development. But we are always learning more, and we are starting to see that the great effect a mother’s diet has on a child’s development both in the womb and throughout their life.
Recent research shows that children of mothers who are malnourished during pregnancy are often small and underweight as they grow up. Conversely when mothers are overweight or overeat during pregnancy their children show a tendency to be overweight later in life.
What we are discovering is that the rhythms of the body are written into us during pregnancy. If a mother eats a well-rounded diet while pregnant, the child will be more like to favor a well-rounded diet in life.
Safe exercise is also important for mothers during pregnancy. An exercise program builds heathy habits for a mother and develops a healthy pattern for the child.
Both healthy eating habits and exercising during pregnancy offer an environment for healthy fetal development and give and child a template from which to grow with throughout their life. Obviously in our Western society, a nutritious diet is expected of mothers; in developing countries however, dietary issues are not necessarily at the front of minds. For the health of generations of people to come, it is important to share knowledge and build understanding about the importance of a healthy diet and exercise during pregnancy.
